Hi! My name is...

... Kat and welcome to 'On the Verge of Hunger: A newsletter on how to run a cafe badly'.

I own and operate a small takeaway cafe located in the bowels of one of Perth's many industrial suburbs where we aim to change the hospitality industry one coffee at a time. We do this by being radically empathetic and ruthlessly kind to our guests.

Sounds kind of violent but I promise people are super into it.

Every fortnight you’ll receive a story about something that’s gone terribly wrong at Quokka Coffee and how we went about fixing it. If we're lucky, I get to share stories about stuff that's gone blissfully right.

You're getting a front row seat to painful lessons in solo entrepreneurship and reflections on how we’re trying to make the world a better place through genuine hospitality, and food and beverage.

Inspired by other far more clever people and Colin Harmon’s ‘What I know About Running Coffee Shops’, this is one owner-operator’s hyperspecific working experience. It may not reflect yours and it certainly doesn’t claim to represent the broader industry.

Do you know other small business owners who struggle with the isolation that often comes with the territory? Or do you have a mate who's always wanted to open a cafe but doesn't know where to start?
